Genetically Modified Food Act - Your Participation is Critical

The RIGHT TO KNOW GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOOD ACT will require food manufacturers to identify genetically engineered ingredients on the labels of foods sold in California, so passing a labeling law for genetically engineered foods in California can have the same impact as passing a federal law, so regardless where you live, it can definately have an impact on you.

Starting May 1, and extending through May 26, 2012, a broad coalition of food, farm, health, public interest, and environmental groups all over the country, joined by leading organic food companies, will attempt to raise one million dollars to support the California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act.  All donations will support state GMO-labeling campaigns and their defense from lawsuits.

Genetically engineered foods have been on the market since 1996, do you honestly know which foods are genetically engineered when you go grocery shopping for yourself or your family?

A group of "Right to Know" public interest organizations and organic companies, as listed below, have pledged to match the first million dollars raised in this nationwide "Drop the Money Bomb on Monsanto Campaign."

The "Right to Know" organizations and organic companies are:
  • The Organic Consumers Association
  • Mercola.com
  • Food Democracy Now
  • Nature's Path
  • Lundberg Family Farms
  • Eden Foods
  • The Organic Consumers Fund
  • Institute For Responsible Technology
As stated by Ronnie Cummins with the Organic Consumers Association:
"Monsanto is one of the most powerful, arrogant and destructive companies in the world.  For decades, they have controlled the world's food supply by buying off politicians and regulatory agencies, intimidating small farmers, manipulating the outcome of scientific studies, lying to consumers - and threatening to sue states like Vermont if they dare to pass a GMO labeling law.
...Despite Monsanto's claims to the contrary, scientists are clear: genetically engineered food has been linked to a wide range of health hazards, including kidney and liver damage, infertility, auto-immune disorders, allergies and autism, accerlerated aging, and birth defects...
We have the right to know if the food we buy has been genetically engineered...It's time to take back our food.  Our farms.  Our power.  It's time to show Monsanto what ordinary people like us can do when we come together.  It's time to drop the money bomb on Monsanto."

What Are GMOs?

What exactly are GMOs?  GMOs are "Genetically Modified Organisms", the process of combining the genes of separate organisms to engineer a new one, such as, corn with modified DNA to produce its own pesticide.

Chemical companies like Monsanto and Dow are feeding us genetically-modified food, GMOs, that have never been fully tested and aren't labeled.

Did you know that:
-80% of all processed foods in the United States contain GMOs.
-Genetically modified food toxins are found in the blood of 80% of unborn babies.
-Monsanto owns 90% of genetically modified seeds in the US.

The GMO Film Project, by Compeller Pictures, (listed above), tells the story of a father's discovery of GMOs through the symbolic act of poor Haitian farmers burning seeds in defiance of Monsanto's gift of 475 tons of hybrid corn and vegetable seeds to Haiti shortly after the devastating earthquake.

Natural and Organic Cereal Findings

The Cornucopia Institute, based in Wisconsin, is a progressive farm policy research group, that researches and investigates agricultural issues that provides information for consumers, family farmers, and the media.

The Cornucopia Institute is recognized by the IRS as a tax-exempt 501 (c)(3) public interest group.

A new research study from The Cornucopia Institute indicates that the "natural" claims in the cereal and granola aisle are misleading consumers.  Cornucopia and USDA research finds GMOs, and toxic pesticide residues in "natural" cereal ingredients and many of these brands are often priced higher than equivalent organic products.

For Cornucopia's Full Report

The Cornucopia Institute has also provided consumers with an "Organic Cereal Scorecard" that lists the brands in a 5-Grain category all the way down to a 1-Grain category.

Brands in the 5-Grain category are trustworthy and committed to organics produced by true heroes in the organic industry.  All products under the brand name are certified organic and were produced without GMOs, toxic pesticides, petrochemical solvents, and other inputs that are strictly prohibited by organics.

Brands in the 1-Grain category are brands that offer no certified organic products and only a handful offer very limited organic choices.  "Natural" products in the 1-Grain category contain ingredients that are likely produced with toxic pesticides, and could contain genetically engineered and hexane-extracted ingredients.
