Rubin Museum of Art Features "Alive Inside"

The World Premiere showing of the Documentary "Alive Inside: A Story of Music and Memory" is scheduled for April 18, 2012 at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City.

In this documentary, neuropsychologist Oliver Sacks and others explore the channels that music courses in the brain and what it might mean for the future of Alzheimer's treatment.

5.6 million people in the U.S. are struggling with dementia and memory loss.  There is no known cure and the numbers are on the rise.

"Alive Inside" follows Dan Cohen, a social worker who decides to bring iPods to a nursing home and discovers by accident, that a person suffering from memory loss can seem to "awaken" when given music they have an emotional attachment to.

According to Oliver Sacks, music imprints itself on the brain deeper than any other human experience, it evokes emotion and emotion can bring with it memory.

The aim of this film is to encourage widespread adoption of personalized music programs in nursing homes.

Screening dates for "Alive Inside" are set for Wednesday, April 18th through Saturday, April 21st.

Each ticket includes a Question and Answer with Alzheimer's specialists along with a post programs informational table staffed by experts from the Alzheimer's Association, New York City Chapter.

Vitamin B12 Awareness, Prevention and Action

Sally M. Pacholok, R.N., B.S.N. and Jeffrey J. Stuart, D.O.,
authors of Could It Be B12?: An Epidemic of Misdiagnoses
Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is essential for the production of red blood cells, aids in the maintenance of a healthy nervous system and is a crucial element in the construction of DNA.

Vitamin B12 deficiency can mimic dementia, multiple sclerosis, early Parkinson's disease, diabetic neuropathy or even chronic fatigue syndrome.  It can cause depression and mental illness, infertility in men and women, or developmental disabilities in children.  Other groups at risk for B12 deficiency include vegans, vegetarians, alcoholics, and people with celiac disease, Crohn's disease, gastric bypass, autoimmune diseases, and AIDS.

B12 deficiency is common and reported to affect 25% of the U.S. poplulation.  It strikes up to 15% (5.9 million) adults 64 and over.  The CDC reports that one out of every 31 Americans over the age of 50 are B12 deficient.

Vitamin B12 is found naturally in animal foods including meat, fish, shellfish, poultry, dairy products, and eggs.

Could It Be B12?: An Epidemic of Misdiagnoses, uncovers how standard medical practice has for decades misdiagnosed vitamin B12 deficiency.  Even though it's a common disorder that can be easily diagnosed and inexpensively treated, few patients are tested for B12 deficiency.  In 1985,  Sally Pacholok diagnosed herself with vitamin B12 deficiency, after her doctors failed to identify her condition.  As a result, she is passionate about the need to educate the public about the dangerous consequences of this hidden and all-too-common disease.

Virgin Coconut Oil Hailed as Alzheimer's Hope

Since Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) is loaded with Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT), Dr. Mary Newport, a neonatal physician at Spring Hill Regional Hospital in Florida, realized after researching the Alzeheimer's drug, AC-1202, also known as Axona, that it's active ingredient is also MCT, began an intensive feeding program for her husband, Steve Newport, 58, after an MRI revealed he had progressive dementia, and in May 2008, after only 5 years, his MMSE test showed he was on the border of severe dementia.

Instead of using Axona at a price of $100 per month for a once a day dose, with some side effects, Mary chose instead to give her husband Virgin Coconut Oil, at a cost of $10 per month receiving 2 tablespoons of a mixture of VCO and its pharmaceutical isolate, MCT, with each meal.

In 18 months, Steve's severe dementia was totally arrested.  Another Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE), concluded he was in the mild range of Alzheimer's.

According to Dr. Bruce Fife, author of "Coconut Cures", "Coconut Water" and "Stop Alzheimer's Now", coconut oil, converted into ketones, acts as a superfuel to the brain and normalizes brain function, stops the erratic signal transmissions that leads to seizures, and improves cognition and memory.  The MCTs in coconut oil provide energy to the brain and stimulate healing and repair.  The chemical structure of the MCTs and fatty acids in coconut oil enable them to pass through the blood-brain barrier, which ordinary food or oil cannot break into.

Dr. Fife, also known as "Dr. Coconut" has established a nonprofit organization, Coconut Research Center, to educate the public on the health and nutritional aspects of coconut.
